Why Daria Werbowy has the face we all want
Just what is it about Daria Werbowy? Already the face of Céline, jewellery brand Malyet and Isabel Marant for H&M, she'll now be representing Mango too. The news was announced today: she's taking over from Miranda Kerr to model the spring/summer 2014 collection.
We've noted before that we can't get enough of Werbowy's wide-featured, feline face, her intense gaze and her effortless cool-girl style. We're obviously not alone. Though she's 15 years into her modelling career, her work continues to go from strength to strength. While a distinctive model like Cara Delevingne may be held up as 'the face of the moment', that honour surely belongs to Werbowy – whose look is chameleon-like and mutable, yet still hauntingly memorable.
'What's interesting is that her face follows a number of classic rules as to what makes a face beautiful,' says Rajiv Grover, plastic surgeon and president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. 'Like Kate Moss, she's a blank canvas. Her face is perfectly designed – it's raw bone structure. There are very few faces that have that je ne sais quoi.'
Then, of course, there's the symmetry of her features. 'You could hold a mirror up to her face – it's the same on both sides. Again, you practically never see that in anybody. It gives her an almost ghost-like, unreal quality.'
While her high cheekbones and brows are stunning, the features we're drawn to again and again are her almond-shaped eyes and mouth. Grover calls this 'the central facial triangle', and explains that it's what we all look at instantly in a face, before noticing anything else. 'Daria has a very strong facial triangle, with such good framing from the brows and cheeks.'
Her features are so iconic, they're almost timeless. 'There's a Vogue cover from 1950 taken by Erwin Blumenfeld – all you can see is an eye and some lips, but even though it's deconstructed, you feel you can see the model's whole face,' notes Grover. 'And it could almost be Daria – it's spooky. Her face is so classical.'
So while Werbowy's appearance might make us feel emotional, there's a science to it. When it comes to symmetry, strong features and the ability to adapt from one picture to the next, she won the lottery. And we can't wait to see what she does next.
