When a film goes to town on singing and dancing, you'd hope they make as big a song and dance about its wardrobe. For every heart-string pulling solo, it would be a shame not to have a devastatingly beautiful gown to match, and sometimes it's just a practical thing - could the cast of Fame have leapt into the splits so readily if they'd not been wearing high-cut knickers and dance skirts? There'd definitely be the ripping of denim on the soundtrack if not.
