Some little girls dream of growing up and becoming a princess. For decades, movie star turned Monaco royalty Grace Kelly was the daydream to end all daydreams, with her elegance, her looks, her poise and (of course) her wardrobe. If only we could have her life, we sighed, if only we too could live the ultimate fairytale. (If that feeling never really left you, you can immerse yourself in the new film Grace of Monaco, which premiered in Cannes last week.)

But time marches cruelly on and the little girls of today are a touch more cynical. They know that to get their prince, they need to go to university and put on a see-through dress impress him with their learning and independence.

That isn't to say that Kate Middleton didn't one day share the same Grace Kelly dream as the rest of us. In fact, she seems to have borrowed rather a lot from that other people's princess, from her feted McQueen wedding dress to the odd veiled hat, button-through coatdress and simple Breton top.
