Givenchy Menswear is the new Givenchy womenswear

by

Women are just so greedy. Not content with taking up 95% of the wardrobe they share with their partners, they also steal their clothing - because men’s jumpers are just so much cosier. Not satisfied with having 75 different shapes of skirt, they also feel the need to rob men’s suiting.

But the borrowing from the boys situation has reached grave new levels of greed. Perhaps it’s due to the exponential rise of the menswear market, or perhaps women are just running out of new ideas, but it now seems that women are getting their claws on men’s catwalk collections before they even hit the shelves. Rihanna, Beyonce, we’re looking at YOU.

Rihanna was the first to sport a look from the Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci spring/summer 14 menswear collection. Posing with her BFF Melissa Forde waaaaay back in July – a mere two weeks after the collection had first unleashed its digi-tech power on the catwalks – the singer looked characteristically amazing in the mansize tee and matching leggings. This was a clear statement that Rihanna basically owns fashion, as not only can she gender-bend better than anyone, but she can do fashion time travel and wear pieces before the samples have even been sent to the factory to be made.

But she’s not alone. Her comrade in diva-dom Beyonce was quick to follow, posting a series of Instagram shots of her partying and cajoling and looking fly in a Givenchy spring menswear look just three days ago. As yet, not a single man has been spotted in the collection.

But who cares, right? Givenchy is so all-powerful now that it transcends anything as mundane as the battle of the sexes. For further proof of its all-encompassing supreme appeal, take a look at our gallery of leading ladies from Cate Blanchett to Liv Tyler, all of whom have trans-vested themselves in the brand’s magical threads.

The question is, will it work the other way? Does Riccardo Tisci’s androgynous appeal extend to Kanye West and David Beckham parading around in women’s Bambi sweaters and sheer floral skirts?
