What do you make of Balenci-Gaga?

Lady Gaga out and about in Los Angeles

Adam Welch, writer
Has Lady Gaga, feeling a little restless and out-of-the-limelight, decided to dress as if she were going for a job interview? Oh, wait, it’s Balenciaga! Unfortunately, where on the runway this all looked like a crisp modern reworking of the house’s legendary couture silhouettes, on Gaga it kind of looks like she’s just whacked on a jumper over a suit that doesn’t really fit. I imagine she’s a bit hot too. Especially if it’s LA she’s stalking around here (the blowdry and Lauren-Conrad-esque sunnies make it look like that’s the case). I suppose that’s what you get if you have to always wear things at least a whole season ahead of everyone else.

This Balenciaga collection looked so great on the catwalk, and even better when I had a sneaky try-on of it. Purist lines combined with a flattering silhouettes, modern shapes meet classic couture styles. So how has Gaga made it look so, well, pedestrian? is it because we're so used to seeing her in a coat made or Kermit-heads or some meat that when she wears anything as banal as, say, a jumper, it's like looking at a dog walking upright. Gaga, leave us our Balenciaga and stick to your novelty outfits please.

Helen Seamons, deputy fashion editor at The Observer
Gaga is never one to shy away from what on paper we might politely call 'a challenging silhouette', and these peplum trousers and cracked paint effect blouson are no exception. I salute her fearlessness in meeting a catwalk challenge head-on. Also she's made the best of a bungled PR shoe send-out by wearing the mis-matched shoes with her usual aplomb. An intern somewhere is breathing a sigh of relief. Top marks for the raven tresses.
