Anna Wintour tweeted and we heart it

by

Anna Wintour has sent her first tweet. Not that she’s actually joined Twitter, you understand, but on Jun 26 at 7.55pm New York time she used the official US Vogue account to send a missive celebrating the pro-gay marriage rulings that occurred in the US yesterday.

The tweet was formal in tone – no emojis or internet slang for Wintour – and to the point; it was 129 characters long and read simply:  ‘Today’s rulings are a big step forward for all Americans striving to achieve equality. I couldn’t be happier or more proud. —A.W.’

The Vogue account has more than 2.5 million followers and, as of this morning, 421 of those had retweeted the message with 192 favouriting it.

So could sphinx-like Wintour finally be persuaded to join Twitter? British Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman is already using the platform (1,226 tweets, 18,766 followers, following 171) to engage with her readers but it feels like Wintour would be more of a Hillary Clinton-style tweeter (seven tweets, 566,572 followers, following six).

Clinton, who has been on Twitter since June 10, is using the medium to knowingly engage with her public persona (her first tweet referenced the Texts from Hillary phenomenon) as well as posting selfies (her word; she really said it) of herself and Chelsea, and is the perfect social media role model for Wintour.

And now to think of just the right Twitter bio for the editor/tennis enthusiast/Manolo lover/mother/Brit in NYC/bob-sporting early riser…
