When pictures of the young Samantha from the Sex and the City spin-off The Carrie Diaries surfaced last week it got us thinking about our teen style. After all, Samantha's teen style makes so much sense for her as an adult. Of course, man-eating Samantha would wear midriff-exposing tops and animal-print and big earrings, even as a 16-year-old.

Our own personal style was a little less predictable however. Everyone in the office has a memory of items worn in the 1990s or 2000s – Morgan minis, Juicy Couture tracksuits or skater-style jeans – that bear little correlation to their looks as adults. We weren't really mini-mes of our grown-up selves, but rather proper teenagers, desperately conforming, furiously rebelling, slavishly following and dressing the way actual real-life – rather than those envisaged by costume departments –teenagers do.
