Taylor Swift, Gwyneth Paltrow and unlikely celebrity friendships
In baffling who-knew-they-were-friends news, Taylor Swift was photographed popping round to Gwyneth Paltrow’s London home for a quick catch-up over the weekend.
The Daily Mail is acting all blasé about the news, reporting that the ‘pair have been pals for years’ and ‘became firm friends thanks to their love of country music’ but I am inclined to think it’s the sort of alliance that should be filed in the ‘unlikely’ file.
What do they really have to talk about? Blonde hair, Star magazine’s really mean most-hated list that they both featured on, Loretta Lynn’s greatest hits, who knows.
Really, the actual basis for this bizarre friendship seems to be that they are both celebrities and that’s what celebrities do: they make friends with other famous people. It’s like celebrities are expats in a strange foreign land and they all band together in their odd enclosed communities rather than integrating effectively.
But instead of developing their arbitrary friendships at bake sales, barbecues, book clubs and parent-teacher meetings at the international school, they have the Met Ball and the green rooms of chat shows.
Another paradigm of this baffling celebrity friendship trend is the foursome of Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend Dave, who are apparently all hanging out together in Saint-Tropez at this very moment. I mean, what?
