What the Frock: Tilda Swinton

'Colour blocking' is a word much used, but rarely understood. I think – I THINK – this is an example of extreme colour blocking. Tilda has cleverly decided to coordinate her hair, suit, shoes and biological pigment, creating one block of colour – to colour block (verb, infintive). She made the right choice to team the Bianca Jagger-inspired tailoring with an androgynous shirt, far chicer than the many white suits seen on the red carpets of the 1990s when only a black bra was required. The embossed bird print on the trousers may be called into question on any other celebrity, but when hanging on someone as cool as Tilda Swinton, I think we can turn a blind eye to it.

Tilda is rocking an amazing suit from Horiyoshi the Third’s collaboration with tailor Timothy Everest (I’m naming it Vampire Bride). The colour combination should be all sorts of wrong for her pale skin but, as we’ve come to expect from Tilda, she has nailed what us mere mortals cannot. Love you, Tilda.

The reigning queen of androgyny does suiting like no other woman. I want that look. Are those bats flying up her leg? A Gothic touch on an optimistically summery look. Nice. Love the 1980s white stiletto. The whole look does err a touch on one of those mini milks I use to have as a child, but ice-cream chic is pretty cool right now. That strained smile almost says, 'Lick me' or does it say, 'Just try it and you'll get the point of my shoe in your Cornetto!'?
