All the glorious make-up from the Dior Cruise show

When it comes to the make-up artist emporers of the world, they don't come much bigger than Peter Phillips. After a long, long tenure as creative director at Chanel, Phillips was recently announced as creative director at Dior. And what better stage to debut his new role than at the recent Dior Cruise 2015 collection in Brooklyn.

If the full-bodied lash look is anything to go by, we can expect Dior's cosmetic aesthetic to take a rather more modern turn: polished, demi-matte skin, groomed and generous brows and a graphic double-winged eyeliner, the simplicity of which so perfectly compliments Raf Simons' (the fashion house's creative director) image of elegant modernity.

'I wanted to create make-up that was both light and sophisticated,' said Phillips backstage. 'The common theme in this collection is in fact the color black, which links all the looks together. Raf Simons and I wanted the make-up to be graphic and elegant to accentuate both the beauty of the silhouettes, and this omnipresent black colour.'

It's a particularly joyful look, especially at a time when most backstage make-up artists are choosing to eschew mascara and liner altogether. In Phillips, we can rest assured that pretty, flattering, wearable, yet properly theatrical make-up will always have a place on the catwalk.
