100 years of loving the T-shirt

by

The T-shirt is 100 years old, having been officially introduced by the US army in 1913, before making its way into sports, academia and then, the whole world's wardrobe. That’s an entire century of comfort and style rolled neatly into one piece of clothing that you can rely on no matter what your age or fashion inclination, and decades of being able to decide whether or not you should be mates with someone simply by eyeing what band is printed on their chest.

In its countless appearances on the catwalk, style icons and the sofa, a T-shirt never looks bad, as this gallery of loyal wearers, from James Dean to Kate Moss, goes to show.

So happy centenary old friend! Here’re ten reasons we’ll always love you…

  1. It’s one of the only things you can legitimately wear to bed, work and a party.
  2. The fancy ones are great, sure, but even a cheap T-shirt has its merits.
  3. It’ll be one of the few things you’ve had in your wardrobe more than ten years that you can still wear. That band T-shirt from your gothy teens: totally Balenciaga with a statement skirt.
  4. The sense of victory when you swipe your favourite borrowed T-shirt after a break-up is second to none (although you’ll miss the T-shirts you didn’t keep your hands on just as hard).
  5. It will go with everything in your wardrobe.
  6. Wearing one without a bra will sneakily make you look ten times sexier than in something obviously risqué without even verging on slutty.
  7. Half the ones you own will have more memories than any of your other clothes.
  8. It will never end its life-long love affair with your other style-beau, jeans. They’re a stronger couple than David and Victoria Beckham.
  9. If you own a Breton-striped version you can rest assured that you’ve always got something stylish to fall back on.
  10. Time only makes them look cooler.
