Project Punk: Tom Binns And Charlotte Olympia Collaborate
The theme of this year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition is ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ and it’s filling us with giddy excitement.
It will be an enormously fun idea for designers to play with as they dress stars for the Met Ball gala opening on May 6, and we’re expecting to see lots of studding and leather. Perhaps even a few Mohicans...
One man who has consistently combined the punk aesthetic with high fashion to powerful effect is jewellery designer Tom Binns, creating glamorous pieces, worn by Michelle Obama and Diane Kruger, that are simultaneously rebellious and ladylike. And now, in a collaboration to celebrate the Met’s exhibition, he is lending some punk credentials to shoe designer Charlotte Olympia.
The two have come together to give some of Charlotte Olympia’s most well-known and recognisable styles a radical little makeover, festooning them with safety pins and piercings. The results – Kitty Flats with a nose ring, for example – are ingenious: humorous yet utterly desirable.
