On hold for Kate Bush tickets? Check out her best style moments

by

We mooted the return of the bush back in February, but those of you who daren't give up waxing just yet will be pleased to know that a different Bush is back: Kate Bush – and the tickets for her no doubt sold-out-before-they-even-opened-the-tills gigs go on sale this morning.

After decades of relative obscurity, save for a couple of wonderfully avant garde albums, Aeriel and 50 Words for Snow, the original art-pop singer has announced that she will perform a string of live dates at Hammersmith Apollo later this year.

Tickets for the surprisingly impromptu shows go on sale next Friday and will no doubt sell out quicker than Kate Bush can wiggle her hips, not least because the costumes she wore for previous live performances and in her now iconic videos (don't pretend you've never been tempted to wail 'Heathcliffe' while wearing a cream dress) were always truly incredible and deserve to be seen IRL. She was wearing hip-skimming high-legs on stage decades before Miley Cyrus was even born, albeit with leggings underneath, and she wore sheer scarves as well as Stevie Nicks ever did, while embellishing them with wilder moves. Plus, if you're looking for inspiration on how to wear mum jeans, look no further than Kate Bush.

She may have favoured a chicer grown up wardrobe of black separates for public appearances of late, but here's hoping she'll bring out the fashion big guns for her return to the stage. Shout out Miuccia Prada for some intelligent and appealingly weird costume design.

Here's a breakdown of the best bits of her style from over the years for a taste of what we can expect to see from her this summer...

The leotard
Sure, Gaga et al are gadding around in skintight onesies these days like they're the only people to have ever thought of it, But Kate Bush was doing it back in the 70s looking like a woodland nymph in an exercise video.

Where'd you get the idea for all those glitter leotards, Beyoncé?

Embellished cardigans and belts added a ballerina feel that matched Kate's always ambitions dance moves. Not the all-important leg warmers that place this look firmly in the late seventies/early eighties.

Why don't people dress like this for the gym these days? So much more glamorous than running shorts and an old T-shirt.

She was known to rock it up a bit with the addition of a biker jacket. There's something a bit Patti Smith about this.

And this never-been-near sport all-in-one is a strong precursor to PJ Harvey in her grungey catsuit days.

Ethereal Kate
This floaty era, defined by the translucent dress she wears in the Wuthering Heights video is best viewed in gifs, because really, the moves make it.

Seriously, this halter-dress was made for slinking, which Kate could do to full effect thanks to multi frame new music video technology.

Sometimes ethereal crossed into seriously weird in Kate's notoriously creative videos, such as this one for Sat in Your Lap. Still, she makes the ballerina dress work, even when flanked by creepy harlequins.

Raf Simons has long been a fan of the big skirt/simple top silhouette at both Jil Sander and now Dior, and it formed a key contingent in Kate's dream-like style oeuvre.

Badass Bush
Bursting forth from beneath floaty chiffon was the Babushka bikini, a beautiful warrior look that proved there was nothing whimsical about Kate.

She's a woman who knows how to toughen up her look by accessorising with her eyes.

Seriously, would you mess with this stare even if it wasn't accompanied by camo get-up, as seen in the wonderfully surreal video for Dreamers.

Extreme blusher and a stern Victorian neckline, too, enhances this master-scowl.

Kate off-duty
Kate Moss might be our modern denim hero, but her namesake was giving some serious lessons in how to wear jeans back in the 80s. High-waisted, belted and stonewashed pairs never looked so good.

Clearly she was reluctant to lose the leg warmers even off-stage, but the slouchy shirt and the jeans: would wear now.

Over-the-knee boots in shearling?! So wrong that they're right? Are they?

Yep, totally coming around to these. Think how warm they'd be!

Pictured here in 1978, this vintage blouse and printed skirt combo still looks thoroughly modern.

The bottom line is she's not afraid of style that is completely batsh*t, AKA, the best kind, so while a woman of 55 might not be as inclined to leap around in lycra as she once might have, there's no doubt that whatever she wears will be amazing all the same.

Welcome back to the stage, Kate!
