As reported in May, Rooney Mara is the face of the Calvin Klein scent, Downtown, and the ad for the fragrance landed on YouTube last night. 

It shows a softer side to Mara, best known for her work in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, her inscrutable red-carpet pose – we haven’t see this girl smile, with teeth we mean, since 2009 – and her impeccably cool wardrobe. 

In this new advert, she melts at the sight of a puppy, displays both her top and bottom teeth as she appears to let out a hearty laugh and dances with some children. This newly personable Mara is interspersed with tougher Mara too as the ad depicts a day or two in her life in a sort of non-time-specific New York, photoshoots, car journeys, press conferences and all. So along with ballgowns, there are tough leather jackets and tired, overnight-commute dressing gowns.

Regular Mara collaborator – he directed her in The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – David Fincher has directed the commercial, and as you would expect from the man behind a series of slick movies (Fight Club, Se7en) and ads for Nike and Coca-Cola, the result is glossy with a hint of edge.
