Zhang Ziyi is the perfect Chanel customer

Ziyi Zhang wears Chanel to the premiere of The Grandmaster in Los Angeles

One of my favourite things about Chanel is that it's ostensibly incredibly bourgeois clothing for 'nice girls' but at its heart, there's a rock and roll, daring take on those classic pieces you'd expect young ladies to don for galas and stuff. That's what's at the heart of Karl Lagerfeld's vision, one he very much inherited from the house's founder, and one which Zhang Ziyi has taken on board with her styling here: cutesy, yes; trad, yes; but that cheeky grin belies the more obviously sophisticated nature of this outfit.

This is exactly how a proper seasoned Chanel customer would style look 71 from its autumn collection. It was given a rather different approach back then – heavy chained boots, choker, attitude, here Zhang Ziyi gives it the upper east side, tea at the Plaza with the gals treatment. There is an optimal third way somewhere in the middle.  One that involves better suited shoes and no earrings, but still, in awe of the dress and Lego bag.

Ooh right well this is taking matchy-matchy to the extreme. While I love each piece individually, the overall effect is just too ‘done’ – she looks like a little doll. The earrings and oh-so-perfect hair and make-up aren’t helping things. I’m sure she looked better at the after-party when her hair and pink lipstick had been mussed up a bit and she’d lost an accessory or two.
