Did Game of Thrones inspire Gaga’s new crop?
So we’ve had a couple of days to mull over the new Lady Gaga video for her forthcoming single Applause and while we’ve got no idea what the, erm, ‘narrative’ is meant to be, there’s one thing that’s absolutely clear: she’s got an amazing haircut. No, not the mermaid waves or the Marilyn curls, but the short, blonde, flicked-over chop.
And why is this the standout look? Because it resembles the hairdo of one of our favourite Game of Thrones characters, Brienne of Tarth. The only woman who can beat Jaime Lannister in a sword fight and battle a bear also has an amazing ‘90s-Leondardo-di-Caprio floppy crop.
Sure, Brienne’s ‘do is usually caked in mud and blood but is it too fanciful to imagine that Gaga’s settled on this as her new look IRL* as well as in the video precisely because of its warrior-like connotations? I think not. Let’s look at the ‘evidence’ (*cough* Wikipedia *cough*):
In an interview the actress Gwendoline Christie who plays Brienne describes her as someone who has had to develop “outer strength that often matches or supersedes that of any man in order to be treated with equality. She doesn’t want to get married… yet she’s internally romantic… she has an overriding sense of honour and what is right, and that’s what makes her such a brilliant character to play: that her outer is so stable and masculine, but inside she’s so fragile.”
In George RR Martin’s books, Brienne describes herself as “...the only child the gods let [my father] keep. The freakish one, one not fit to be son or daughter.” That sounds like Gaga’s kind of woman.
So it’s official, if you want an inspirational haircut for the new season, look no further than our favourite fantasy TV series. From Brienne’s crop to Daenerys’ flaxen plaits, there’s something for every woman (dragons and swords optional).
