Mel Arter talks fresh linen, roast dinners and horse saddles
The legendary make-up artist and Max Factor ambassador talks about the fashion scent that reminds her of freshly laundered washing
‘Right now I’m wearing Eaudemoiselle de Givenchy. I was given it through a job that I worked on and I loved it straight away. To me it smells very light, very feminine. It’s quite fresh too, sort of like newly laundered washing, which is actually a smell I really love. I wear it every day at the moment though I sometimes like a stronger scent for evenings out. I really like Jil Sander No. 4. It’s heavier and feels more grown up for night time. Adam Reed introduced me to it – I always used to steal a spray of it when I went over to his place and eventually he gave it to me!
"My favourite smell is the smell you get when you remove a leather saddle from a sweaty horse. Sounds weird, but it really is one of the best smells ever."
I am going to Cornwall and Greece this summer and will be taking Eaudemoiselle with me. Although having said that I do love a scented body lotion in the evenings on holiday. After a shower there’s nothing nicer than a scented body lotion. I love some of the Diptyque ones in particular. I never actively look for a scent – I seem to just find them or be given them – but if I smell something on someone else I will always inquire about what it is.
My favourite smell is the smell you get when you remove a leather saddle from a sweaty horse. Sounds weird, but it really is one of the best smells ever. It reminds me of being little and I love that riding environment. The smell that reminds me of home the most is a roast dinner – it’s one of the best smells ever.’
