The week when everything went a bit Gatsby
Now, we don't remember any scene in The Great Gatsby in which Daisy shows up to a party with her nipples on full and splendid view. But without a doubt, when Rihanna arrived at the CFDA Awards this week in a sparkling Adam Selman gown, headscarf and white fur, she was (in her own highly unique way) channelling 1920s style.
In fact, the dress wasn't a million miles away from a risqué frock that Marilyn Monroe wore in Some Like It Hot, which was set in 1929.
As it turns out, 1920s style has been the micro-trend of this week. Trust us – we've been through the red carpet pictures with a fine-tooth comb, and hints of the era were everywhere from New York to London. We're not suggesting it was a co-ordinated campaign to bring back vintage style, but clearly there was something in the air.
Also at the CFDAs, for example, were Olivia Wilde and Olivia Palermo in gowns from Decades LA and Ann Taylor:
They were fringed. They were flapper-like. They were crying out for somebody to do the Charleston at their earliest convenience.
Then there was Daisy Lowe at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, wearing the kind of high-waisted, louche trousers that Coco Chanel might have thrown on to go to the beach.
See?:
And finally, there was a spate of tumbling sequinned gowns on the red carpet – from model Angela Lindvall, Solange Knowles (in Calvin Klein) and Naomi Campbell (wearing Diane von Furstenberg).
Who knows where this micro-trend has come from – maybe this early summer moment just feels right for glittering glamour and the liberating sensation of free-flowing fabrics. 1920s fashions are forever seductive, associated with a moment of exciting giddiness that was sandwiched between two world wars. Given half the chance, we'd all be at Gatsby's this weekend, glugging champagne and shaking our fringing with everything we've got.
