Bob Mackie: designer to the divas

by

Cher has once again turned to long-time collaborator, legendary costume designer Bob Mackie, to design the stage outfits for what is thought to be her final tour.

As 67-year-old Cher releases her first new single in 12 years, Mackie, who is 73, has been talking to Women’s Wear Daily about working with the diva. ‘It’s not like dressing a regular person – it’s like dressing a crazy goddess,’ he told the trade paper. Well, yes, quite.

With 20 outfit changes per night, Mackie will have his work cut out for him, and we can’t even begin to imagine how many individual sequins will be used in the creation of the spectacular styles. Headdresses, boas and wing/tail designs are almost certain to feature too.

Mackie has been working with Cher since the 1960s, when the pair met backstage at The Carol Burnett Show, a US variety show for which Mackie designed the costumes. Cher went on to help facilitate the designer’s transition from costume to fashion, as she began to wear his clothes on the red carpet, most famously when she turned up to the 1986 Oscars in a midriff-baring zig-zagged ensemble, which was topped off with a peaked headdress made of sequins and feathers that stood at least a foot high, pictured.

Mackie has also dressed Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Collins, Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, Barbie and just about every other sparkle-loving diva you can think of, but he told Vice earlier this year: ‘The fashion world never really accepted me. I was always a costume designer, not a fashion designer. But because of the women I dressed, I was kind of dragged into the fashion world, which was fine, but the fashion press never really liked me.’
