Vintage Hollywood, coloured in
This image of Audrey Hepburn made our hearts skip. We’re constantly assailed by her, sometimes too much, but always in aloof monochrome. The mere act of colouring her in makes her real somehow.
No longer a distant icon, now she’s just a girl, crouching in front of an oven, asking it to cook for her.
Colourised black and white movies are, largely, woeful, resembling an attack by an over-zealous toddler clutching a rainbow of Crayola. 'Glorious Technicolour' was a misnomer if ever there was one. However, these old Hollywood images have been sympathetically rendered by highly skilled artists. Who have trawled archives of historical reference material, such as portraits, rather than gone, right, lips! Pink. Skin! Salmon. Eyes! Blue. They’ve done their research, it seems.
We spent hours devouring this fascinating corner of Reddit, which breathes life into the first Apollo moon mission, Albert Einstein laughing, probably at a really dirty joke, and the Hindenburg disaster.
