The CFDAs: the winners and the red carpet

by

New York's fashion industry gathered last night at the Lincoln Center for the Council of Fashion Designers of America annual awards, which celebrate American talent new and established, as well as nodding to what's going on beyond Manhattan, too.

Womenswear designer of the year went to Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez in recognition of the near-couture levels of workmanship their line has reached recently. Riccardo Tisci was presented with the international award by Jessica Chastain for his work at Givenchy, while Alexander Wang was shortlisted for womenswear designer of the year, presumably both for the continued success of his own label as well as his promotion to creative designer at one of Paris's most prestigious houses last November. Having Wang in charge at Balenciaga is proof that New York is every bit as part of the international industry as the European capitals.

As expected, Hillary Clinton was also there, to present the founders award to Oscar de la Renta for his continued long service to American fashion. Another reference to longevity came in Ralph Lauren presenting Vera Wang with the lifetime achievement award.

The evening was hosted by TV presenter Andy Cohen and the other winners were as follows:

Menswear Designer of the Year: Thom Browne
Accessories Designer of the Year: Phillip Lim
Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear:Suno's Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty
Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Menswear: Public School's Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne
Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Accessories Design: Pamela Love
