How high maintenance is the Never Underdressed team?

by

Lady Gaga has confessed that she changes her clothes up to twelve times a day. And this doesn’t mean a multitude of tour costumes; this is just a normal day. Imagine how much leather and lace she must get through. This style habit certainly explains her vast and extensive lookbook.

Meanwhile at the opposite end of the spectrum, Eleanor Margolis praises the rise of ‘unashamedly gross’ girls in the New Statesman this week, using Lena Dunham and Lana Del Rey as her figureheads for boldly unladylike low maintenance behaviour.

In the Never Underdressed office we’re equally split, some of us applying meticulous attention to our daily style routines, others of us being a bit French about it, as the following confessions prove…

Carrie Tyler, editor: HIGH. 'I am very strict about keeping up grooming appointments. A mani every two weeks, threading, wax and pedi every four, a cut and highlights every 10-12 weeks. Apart from that I’m casual personified…'

Harriet Walker, news editor: HIGH/:LOW. 'I actually don’t think I have a habit that is consistently high-maintenance in itself, but whenever there’s a special occasion I like to unleash my inner WAG: fake tan; highlights; at least an hour spent on make-up. People always say nice things after I’ve done it which often makes me think I should make more effort generally. But unless there’s the threat of a camera being present, I just can’t find the fear to motivate myself.'

Laura Silver, staff writer: LOW. 'It might sound gross, but I probably only wash my hair about once a week. There are a few reasons for this. Laziness is a key one; my hair's really wild and takes ages to style once washed. But, hairdressers do recommend you wash your hair as little as possible to retain natural oils, and if you're hair's dyed, as mine is, to keep colour bright. Plus, it means expensive products last ages.'

Angelica Hermon, beauty writer: HIGH. 'I’m really particular about shoes. The soles of shoes, to be precise. When packing, they have to, have to, HAVE to go in individual dust bags and the thought of the sole of a sandal or heel touching my clothes… it doesn’t even bear thinking about. I would never ever touch the sole of a shoe and at home there’s no way such a thing would ever see the surface of a bed or sofa. My boyfriend, who is far less bothered about such a thing, often forgets this. The other day he managed to sneak a pair of shoes into my bag as his own case was full, without me noticing.  On arrival at the destination and me opening my bag to find a grubby pair of Converse lying on top of my white Equipment shirt…. you can’t even begin to imagine what unfurled.'

Lynn Enright, staff writer: LOW. 'I repaint my nails when they chip because I often just don’t have time to take it all off and start over so then they end up all bumpy and lumpy and uneven. Sorry.'

Joanna McGarry, beauty director: HIGH. 'I must insist that my bed is made each morning ‘hotel style.’ The definition of which is four expensive duck down pillows, all standing upright (drop them lengthways on the carpet for the ultimate plump) in front of a triptych of huge waffle-edged cushions, equally plumped and upright. The duvet should be puffed up but smooth and folded down at the top, in any colour as long as it’s white (I realise at this point I sound like a hideous school marm).   My insistence on this, means that invariably I end up making it myself each day. However, if my boyfriend decides to take the helm, I shout ‘Hotel style! Hotel style!’ at him until he buckles. It all takes a bit a longer but it makes me feel a bit like I live in a suite at The Ritz, like Coco Chanel.'

Elin Evans, junior fashion editor: LOW. 'I’m really chilled out about most things, very low maintenance. I’ve just bought the most amazing campervan and have been enjoying many weekends away at the beach.  Sadly ‘Flo’ doesn’t have a shower so there have been a few weekends where I’ve done what I’m calling a wet wipe shower.'

Ursula Lake, fashion director: HIGH. 'I guess that my most high maintenance and expensive habit is my exercise. I currently have a membership to a Pilates studio, a Yoga studio, A Bootcamp style work out studio as well as two memberships to gyms : one near the house and one near the office.  It’s sort of out of control but I just feel that much better in my skin after a workout.'
