What the Frock: Angelina Jolie
Our panelists on the latest and greatest celebrity looks
Angelina Jolie wearing Saint Laurent in Paris
Jack Sunnucks, writer
Looking at Angelina in this severe pantsuit in front of the World War Z diorama does pose the question: why wasn't she cast in the main role? From what I've seen of the trailer, Brad looks kind of old and stoned throughout, while Mireille Enos works on her distraught face. How much better would it have been to have La Ange saving the world from zombies? I would pay double to see Ange lobotomise a zombie. Anyway, it pleases me greatly to see a Hollywood actress in a suit instead of something froufrou – trousers can be just as elegant, if not more so, than miles of train. She doesn't look miserable and like she's being demeaned by pink tulle. Jolie suits the 'new' Saint Laurent aesthetic perfectly, I love the looks she's been turning out in it, and hope she continues to.

The thing about Angelina is that once you get over the fact that she’s never going to do fashion for fashion’s sake, you start to really appreciate her reliable restraint. Here she is, once again in tailored black, but she’s in Paris so that’s exactly what she should be wearing. And I am thankful for the small mercies of this ensemble; the narrow trouser in place of Angelina’s allies, the pencil skirt or long dress and her perfectly centred ponytail. It’s in the exact, perfect, geometric placement on her head – scraped back in a straight line from the tops of the ears. See, small mercies.

I really like this look on Angelina; she pulls off the well-groomed element of it very well, as she always looks so sleek. She also touches on the trend for masculine tailoring, which is a big focus for next season but have started coming through already.
